🇮🇹 Materasso deriva dall’arabo maṭraḥ, che significa "il posto dove gettare cose". Questo termine è stato introdotto nella lingua italiana dai crociati che tornarono dal Medio Oriente, dove avevano adottato l'abitudine di dormire su grandi cuscini.

🇮🇹 Il materassaio - un mestiere antico quasi scomparso.

Fino alla seconda metà degli anni settanta, quando nelle case era ancora molto presente il materasso di lana, esisteva la figura del “materassaio”, una persona che girava cortile per cortile con il suo carretto e tutti gli strumenti per sistemare i materassi.

Il suo lavoro consisteva nel rinfilare i fiocchetti di lana e ricucire il bordo del materasso con aghi lunghissimi, chiamati aghi saccurali.

Ogni anno, il materassaio veniva chiamato per effettuare la manutenzione dei materassi: si scuciva il materasso, si estraeva la lana che veniva poi lavata, stesa al sole ad asciugare, cardata ed infine rimessa nel materasso.

Questo processo durava qualche giorno e spargeva una fastidiosa polvere per tutta la casa. Il suo lavoro si svolgeva prevalentemente nei mesi estivi per terminare prima del periodo delle “bottiglie di pomodoro”.

Until the late 1970s, when wool mattresses were still very common in homes, the figure of the “materassaio” was prominent. This person went from courtyard to courtyard with his cart and all the tools to fix mattresses.

His work consisted of re-stuffing the wool tufts and stitching the edge of the mattress with very long needles called saccurali needles.

Each year, the materassaio was called to perform mattress maintenance: the mattress was unstitched, the wool was removed, washed, laid out in the sun to dry, carded, and then put back into the mattress.

This process took a few days and spread annoying dust all over the house. His work was mainly carried out in the summer months to finish before the “tomato canning” period.
