🇮🇹 Quatto deriva dalla parola latina coactus, participio passato di cogĕre, che significa "raccogliere, ammassare, costringere."
Il termine si è evoluto per descrivere qualcuno accovacciato o schiacciato vicino al terreno, che cerca di rimanere in silenzio per evitare di essere scoperto.
Sebbene fosse probabilmente già in uso nel linguaggio parlato, fu Dante a introdurre ufficialmente questo termine nel vocabolario italiano: nell'Inferno (Canto XXI, verso 89), vediamo l'uso di quatto in una scena che combina elementi di umorismo e paura. Virgilio consiglia a Dante, non noto per il suo coraggio fisico, di nascondersi dai diavoli dietro alcune rocce.
🇬🇧 Quatto originates from the Latin word coactus, the past participle of cogĕre, meaning "to collect, amass, force." The term evolved to describe someone crouched down or pressed close to the ground, trying to remain silent to avoid detection.
Although it was possibly already in use in spoken language, Dante officially introduced this term into Italian vocabulary: In the Inferno (Canto XXI 89), we see the use of quatto in a scene that combines elements of humor and fear. The character Dante, not known for his physical courage, is advised by Virgil to hide from the devils behind rocks.

Sì, esatto: SQUAT condivide la stessa origine di QUATTO. Questa connessione è evidente nell'azione fisica descritta da entrambe le parole: accovacciarsi, abbassarsi verso terra. È interessante notare che, anche se il loro significato è piuttosto simile, QUIET e QUATTO non hanno la stessa origine, poiché QUIET deriva dal latino quiēscere (riposare).
