🔎 L’ORIGINE DELLA PAROLA

🇮🇹 Tornare deriva dal latino tornare che significava "lavorare al tornio, far girare".
Anche se le parole sono uguali, il significato del verbo latino era molto preciso e ristretto al campo del lavoro artigiano.

Il significato più generico di "fare girare, muovere o muoversi in circolo" arriva solo nel latino volgare - cioè nel latino parlato dal popolo. Da questo significato si sviluppò poi l'idea di "tornare indietro", che è il senso principale nell'italiano moderno, ma anche del francese tourner e dell'inglese turn.

🇬🇧 Tornare comes from Latin tornare which meant "to work on a lathe, to turn". Although the words are the same, the meaning of the Latin verb was very precise and limited to the field of craftsmanship.

The more general meaning of "to turn, to move or move in a circle" only arrived in Vulgar Latin - that is, in the Latin spoken by common people. From this meaning then developed the idea of "going back", which is the main sense in modern Italian, but also in French tourner and English turn.
