🇮🇹 L’arrotino: la voce dell’aggiustatutto

Ieri mattina, domenica, sono stata svegliata da una voce familiare, anche se non la sentivo da anni. Era arrivato l’arrotino (qui sotto l’audio della voce che tutti gli arrotini utilizzano).

L'arrotino è una persona che affila coltelli e forbici, ripara ombrelli e aggiusta piccoli danni in casa. In famiglia o con gli amici, se c’è qualcuno bravo ad aggiustare le cose, può essere soprannominato arrotino, aggiustino o l’aggiustatutto.

Visto che non ne passano più spesso e che non potevo non farvi conoscere questa tradizione italiana, ho deciso di vestirmi velocemente - senza neanche aggiustarmi i capelli - e di correre giù con il primo coltello da cucina che ho trovato nel cassetto - tanto erano tutti da affilare.

L'arrotino era un signore anziano con le mani callose. Ha preso il mio coltello e, con gesti esperti, le ha affilate su una pietra rotante - ho imparato che questa pietra si chiama mola.

Mentre lavorava, l'arrotino mi ha raccontato che il suo è un mestiere che sta scomparendo. "Una volta, in ogni quartiere c'era almeno un arrotino. La gente preferiva aggiustare le cose invece di comprale nuove. Ora siamo così pochi che in certi quartieri di Roma riesco a passare una sola volta all’anno”.

Ecco perché non sentivo “È arrivato l’arrotino” da tempo! Parlando di questo, mi è venuta in mente una domanda:”Le posso chiedere perché avete tutti la stessa voce che esce dagli altoparlanti?”, gli ho chiesto.

Mi ha risposto che è tradizione: “Un tempo, quando gli arrotini giravano per le strade con la bicicletta o il carretto, urlavano. Poi sono arrivate le macchine e abbiamo iniziato a usare il megafono. Lì, c’erano ancora voci tutte diverse, anche se tutti dicevamo le stesse cose. Quando sono arrivate le audiocassette, abbiamo iniziato a usare quelle: un signore che lavorava in radio ha registrato la sua voce e da allora la usiamo tutti”.

Nel frattempo era arrivato un altro cliente che doveva aggiustare due ombrelli.
Perciò ho pagato, ringraziato e salutato.

In pochi minuti, il mio coltello era tornato come nuovo e ho trovato una storia italiana da raccontarvi!

Yesterday morning, Sunday, I was awakened by a familiar voice, even though I hadn't heard it in years. The knife grinder had arrived (below is the audio of the voice that all knife grinders use).

The knife grinder is a person who sharpens knives and scissors, repairs umbrellas, and fixes small damages in the house. In families or among friends, if someone is good at fixing things, they might be nicknamed arrotino, aggiustino, or l'aggiustatutto (the fix-it-all).

Since they don't come around often anymore and I couldn't miss the chance to introduce you to this Italian tradition, I decided to get dressed quickly - without even fixing my hair - and run downstairs with the first kitchen knife I found in the drawer - they all needed sharpening anyway.

The knife grinder was an elderly gentleman with callused hands. He took my knife and, with expert gestures, sharpened it on a rotating stone - I learned that this stone is called a mola.

While working, the knife grinder told me that his profession is disappearing. "Once, there was at least one knife grinder in every neighborhood. People preferred to fix things instead of buying new ones. Now we're so few that in some neighborhoods of Rome, I can only come around once a year."

That's why I hadn't heard "The knife grinder is here!" in a while! Talking about this, a question came to mind: "Can I ask you why you all have the same voice coming out of the speakers?" I asked him.

He replied that it's tradition: "Once, when knife grinders roamed the streets with bicycles or carts, we shouted. Then cars came, and we started using megaphones. At that point, there were still different voices, even though we all said the same things. When audio cassettes arrived, we started using those: a man who worked in radio recorded his voice, and we've all been using it ever since."

Meanwhile, another customer had arrived who needed to fix two umbrellas. So I paid, thanked him, and said goodbye.

In just a few minutes, my knife was like new again and I collected a new Italian story for you!
