🇮🇹 L’arte di cancellare
Ieri, durante la pausa pranzo, ho fatto un salto al museo di Treccani Arte, che si trova nello stesso edificio del nostro ufficio ed è uno spazio dedicato all’arte contemporanea. Mentre giravo tra le opere, mi sono fermata davanti a una di Emilio Isgrò, famoso artista siciliano, chiamata “Venti voci per la Treccani e dieci virgole per il mondo”.
Mentre la guardavo con aria confusa, Beatrice, una collega che lavora per Treccani Arte, si è avvicinata.
"Ciao Giulia, che bello averti qui! Ti piace l’arte contemporanea?"
"Ciao Bea! Mi piace, sì, ma faccio fatica a capirla...", ho risposto.
"Ahaha è normale. Capita spesso di sentire i visitatori dire 'Questo lo potevo fare anch’io', e in effetti è così. L’importante però è l’idea dietro l’opera.
Ad esempio, Isgrò cancella le parole per un motivo preciso. Non vuole distruggerle, ma farci concentrare su di esse in un mondo pieno di immagini. Cancellare per lui è un modo per dire 'no' a certe cose per poter dire 'sì' a quelle che contano davvero."
Ha continuato: "Isgrò crede che le parole siano fondamentali. Dice che è dalla parola che nasce il pensiero, non viceversa."
"E il titolo dell'opera?" ho chiesto, curiosa.
"Ah, il titolo è interessante!" ha risposto Beatrice. "Le 'venti voci' sono le voci, le parole, dell'enciclopedia che Isgrò ha scelto di mantenere, di preservare. Le 'dieci virgole' rappresentano le pause per riflettere. Isgrò dice che le virgole servono per fermarsi a ragionare: se non hai più le virgole, non pensi più."
Beatrice mi ha anche raccontato di aver studiato in Bocconi, dove c'è un'altra opera famosa di Isgrò. "Si chiama 'Cancellazione del debito pubblico'," mi ha spiegato. "È un'opera enorme, quattro metri per tre. Isgrò ha cancellato diagrammi, curve e numeri, lasciando solo alcuni zeri. Voleva farci riflettere non solo sul debito economico, ma anche su quello che ognuno di noi ha con se stesso e con gli altri nella società."
Alla fine della spiegazione, mi sentivo come se avessi scoperto un nuovo mondo. Per ringraziare Beatrice, le ho proposto: "Che ne dici di un caffè al bar di fronte? Hanno anche dei maritozzi buonissimi!"

Yesterday, during my lunch break, I stopped by the Treccani Arte museum, which is in the same building as our office and is a space dedicated to contemporary art. As I was walking among the artworks, I paused in front of one by Emilio Isgrò, a famous Sicilian artist, called "Twenty Voices for Treccani and Ten Commas for the World".
While I was looking at it with a confused expression, Beatrice, a colleague who works for Treccani Arte, approached me.
"Hi Giulia, it's great to see you here! Do you like contemporary art?"
"Hi Bea! I do like it, yes, but I struggle to understand it..." I replied.
"Haha, that's normal. We often hear visitors say 'I could have done this myself', and indeed, that's true. But what's important is the idea behind the work. For example, Isgrò erases words for a specific reason. He doesn't want to destroy them but to make us focus on them in a world full of images. For him, erasing is a way to say 'no' to certain things and say 'yes' to what matters."
She continued: "Isgrò believes that words are fundamental. He says that thought comes from words, not vice versa."
"And what about the title of the work?" I asked, curious.
"Ah, the title is interesting!" Beatrice replied. "The 'twenty voices' are the entries, the words, from the encyclopedia that Isgrò chose to keep, to preserve. The 'ten commas' represent pauses for reflection. Isgrò says commas are used to stop and think: if you no longer have commas, you no longer think."
Beatrice also told me that she studied at Bocconi University, where there's another famous work by Isgrò. "It's called 'Cancellation of Public Debt'," she explained. It's a huge work, four meters by three. Isgrò erased diagrams, curves, and numbers, leaving only a few zeros. He wanted us to reflect not only on economic debt but also on the debt that each of us has with ourselves and with others in society."
At the end of the explanation, I felt like I had discovered a new world. To thank Beatrice, I suggested: "How about a coffee at the bar across the street? They also have delicious maritozzi!"
