🇮🇹 Matita viene dalla parola latina haematites, che a sua volta deriva dal greco αἱματίτης (aimatites). Questo termine greco significa letteralmente "pietra color sangue". Il nome si riferiva originariamente a una pietra rossa usata per disegnare. Con il tempo, la prima vocale "a" è caduta, trasformando "amatita" in "matita".

Mi chiedo spesso il perché dei nomi degli oggetti. Capita anche a te?
Ieri mi chiedevo: la penna si chiama penna perché prima delle penne moderne si usavano le penne degli uccelli. E allora perché la matita si chiama matita? Quando è stata inventata? Perché i disegni di Leonardo sono rossi e non grigi?
Ecco quello che ho scoperto.
Esiste un minerale di ferro di colore rosso il cui colore ricorda molto il sangue, tanto che gli antichi greci lo chiamavano "haimaitítes", che significa 'del colore del sangue' (hâima significa 'sangue'). L’ematite è il minerale usato per colorare fin dall'antichità, da quando le persone lasciavano impronte di mani nelle grotte.
Nel Rinascimento l’ematite veniva usata in bastoncini o cannucce. Il suo rosso inconfondibile e simile al sangue faceva chiamare questa matita “la sanguigna”.
Ma perché oggi le matite scrivono in grigio? Per scoprirlo dobbiamo fare un salto nell’Inghilterra del XVI secolo.
Lì infatti fu scoperto il primo giacimento di grafite al mondo. Tuttavia, inizialmente la grafite veniva utilizzata solo per marchiare gli animali, avvolta in pezzi di stoffa o canne di bambù.
Si dice che fu una coppia italiana, Simonio e Lyndiana Bernacotti, ad avere l’idea di scavare il legno - principalmente bastonicini di ginepro - e di chiudere la grafite lì dentro. Il risultato era una matita piatta, ovale e compatta.
La matita moderna, con un bastoncino di grafite inserito in due metà di legno che poi vengono incollati insieme, è stata inventata nel XVIII secolo tra Francia e Germania, dove ancora oggi esistono aziende centenarie come Conté, Faber-Castell e Staedler.
Ed è così che una parola greca che indicava una pietra è passata a uno strumento nuovo, che ha dimenticato il suo passato rosso, ma non la sua importanza nell'arte.

Yesterday, I thought that the pen was called "penna" in Italian because, before modern pens, people used bird feathers. So why is a pencil called "matita"? When was it invented? Why are Leonardo's drawings red and not gray?
Here's what I discovered.
There's an iron mineral with a red color that strongly resembles blood, so much so that the ancient Greeks called it "haimaitítes," meaning 'blood-colored' (hâima means 'blood'). Hematite has been used for coloring since antiquity, when people left handprints in caves.
During the Renaissance, hematite was used in sticks or reeds. Its unmistakable blood-like red color led to this pencil being called "sanguigna" (blood-red crayon).
But why do pencils write in gray today? To find out, we need to travel to 16th-century England.
There, the world's first graphite deposit was discovered. However, initially, graphite was used only to mark animals wrapped in cloth or bamboo canes.
It's said that an Italian couple, Simonio and Lyndiana Bernacotti, had the idea of hollowing out wood - mainly juniper sticks - and enclosing the graphite inside. The result was a flat, oval, and compact pencil.
The modern pencil, with a graphite stick inserted between two halves of wood that are then glued together, was invented in the 18th century between France and Germany, where century-old companies like Conté, Faber-Castell, and Staedtler still exist today.
And that's how a Greek word that referred to a stone passed to a new tool, which has forgotten its red past, but not its importance in art.
