🇮🇹 Perché lo chiamiamo affresco?

L'affresco è un tipo di pittura murale molto antico. La parola "affresco" viene da "fresco", perché si dipinge su intonaco umido, fresco.

Questa tecnica divenne molto importante durante il Rinascimento italiano. L'artista mette i colori direttamente sull'intonaco bagnato e, quando l'intonaco si asciuga, i colori diventano parte del muro.

Grandi artisti italiani come Giotto, Masaccio, Michelangelo e Raffaello hanno usato questa tecnica. Parleremo di ognuno di loro in storie separate (qui abbiamo parlato di Giulio Romano e della sua Sala dei Giganti a Palazzo Te, Mantova)

Dipingere "a fresco" richiede velocità e precisione: l'artista deve dipingere mentre l'intonaco è ancora bagnato e lavora in parti chiamate "giornate" (un giorno di lavoro). Questo perché l'intonaco inizia a seccarsi dopo circa 6-8 ore. Quando è secco, non assorbe più il colore.

È interessante sapere che gli errori in un affresco sono difficili da cancellare. Se un artista fa un errore grande, deve togliere l'intonaco e ricominciare. Per questo, gli artisti pianificavano con attenzione e facevano disegni preparatori chiamati "cartoni".

Nonostante sia difficile, l'affresco dura molto tempo. Molti affreschi esistono ancora oggi dopo centinaia di anni. Questo ci fa capire quanto erano bravi gli artisti e quanto è resistente questa tecnica antica.

Mi sento molto fortunata perché il nostro ufficio si trova dentro la sede di Treccani e alcune riunioni - purtroppo non tutte - le facciamo sotto questo meraviglioso affresco nel Salone Rosso.

🇬🇧 Why do we call it fresco?

Fresco is a very ancient type of wall painting. The word "fresco" comes from "fresh", because you paint on damp, fresh plaster.

This technique became very important during the Italian Renaissance. The artist applies colors directly onto the wet plaster and, when the plaster dries, the colors become part of the wall.

Great Italian artists like Giotto, Masaccio, Michelangelo and Raphael used this technique. We will talk about each of them in separate stories (here we talked about Giulio Romano’s Hall of Giants at Palazzo Te, Mantua)

Painting "a fresco" requires speed and precision: the artist must paint while the plaster is still wet and works in sections called "giornate" (a day's work). This is because the plaster starts to dry after about 6-8 hours. When it's dry, it no longer absorbs color.

It's interesting to know that mistakes in a fresco are difficult to erase. If an artist makes a big mistake, they have to remove the plaster and start over. For this reason, artists planned carefully and made preparatory drawings called "cartoons".

Despite being difficult, fresco lasts a long time. Many frescoes still exist today after hundreds of years. This shows us how skilled the artists were and how durable this ancient technique is.

I feel very lucky because our office is located within the Treccani headquarters, and some meetings - unfortunately not all - we hold under this wonderful fresco in the Salone Rosso [Red Hall].
